LAST SPIKE
CONSTRUCTION

Origins of Last Spike

My professional career in construction started at a very young age, as the son of a contractor who was always ahead of his time. Needless to say, I was shown how to work by honest hardworking parents who were always looking to succeed. There was no difference between Sundays and Tuesdays for them. When they had work to do, they would do it.

In the late 80’s when the recession was at its worst and times were tough, my family was contracting in the foundation business by introducing the Duraform system which soon took over conventional plywood forming. If you wanted to make a little money, you had to outsmart the next guy… when there is not much work going around, you have to find ways to make it work.

I started at 11 years old doing footings with my father as my first summer job.

I went through high school with great grades, but I was looking for a job where I could use my body and my brain. I knew so much about construction already that it was the smartest choice for me to make.
I took a college course about business management at 19 (just so I could complete my carpentry ticket).

At 17 I was already working full-time, and by the time I was 22 I was already running my own crew and managing every aspect of the business. We had been specializing in ICF which was a new product at the time. Once again, my family was a pioneer in a new way of building with concrete.
At 28, I started my first business as a contractor and bought out my father’s equipment. I ran this business for a few years, but I always had a passion for the wild west and ranching so, in 2016 decided to move out west to pursue my dream.

When I arrived in BC in the fall of 2016, I founded Last spike Construction ltd. I Started out strong with all the experience and custom equipment/trailers I had. I was a lot more efficient, fast, and quality driven than my competitors were. I got to go in all corners of the Province from Fernie to Vancouver Island, doing jobs and projects that others were uncomfortable doing or didn’t know how to do. I made a name for myself by working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and staying onsite until the job was done.

After my business reached a certain point, and things were going well, I felt like I needed a new challenge, and so I started Last Spike Trailer sales. I was the first dealer Introducing Galvanized trailers out-west. Once again, my family tradition of pioneering new innovations held true, as these trailers were ahead of their time in an era where all the other trailers being sold required regular repainting.

In 2018, I had fulfilled my dream of moving out west and seeing much of what British Columbia had to offer, and I was looking for the perfect place to settle down with my family to finalise the dream of ranching. The Kamloops region had it all. A central location for all of BC, all major stores and equipment dealers for commercial parts and services, and beautiful scenery to get out and enjoy nature. So, my family and I started looking into farms in the Kamloops area. After a few months we met an amazing 4th generation ranching family who had one last parcel for sale. That was it! We realized our dream of buying bare land in Beautiful Knutsford BC.

This is where all Last Spike operations will be brought together as it has room for my construction equipment, trailers, and still, plenty of room for farming. We will in the near future ranch our own livestock to complete what I call ‘full-time work’.
